Good Dog Park Behavior Guide
Dog parks are a safe area for dogs to run off leash and socialize with other dogs. Most dog parks, including the Baron Cameron OLDA in Reston, are fenced to allow dogs to run and play without fear of cars or going afoul of leash laws! Since most dogs spend their days confined to our homes and yards, dog parks (also called Off Leash Dog Areas) give our canine friends an opportunity to exercise, explore and burn off excess energy. Dog parks also give people the opportunity to socialize with other dog owners and make new friends!
The goal of off leash dog parks is for dogs and people to have fun - so good behavior and manners by everyone are essential to provide the safe environment needed to meet this goal. Here are a few pointers to help create a great dog park experience:
Obey The Rules
Yes, they are sometimes goofy or seemingly heavy handed. Yes, they may differ with your take on the off leash experience for your dog. However, they are
put in place to keep you and your dog safe and provide the public officials that authorize off leash parks (in most areas) peace of mind. Often the rules are required to maintain public support for the facility. Review and follow the posted rules to ensure your safety and the continued operation of the dog park you love!
No People Food
This is a rule in many dog parks (including the Baron Cameron OLDA) for a couple of good reasons. First, some dogs are food aggressive or, at the very least, food fanatics! Having food inside the park can result in unwanted attention from a dog you don't know, and even create an environment where dogs will fight over any dropped morsel or crumbs in the trash can. Secondly, dog parks are full of activity. As the handler, your primary responsibility should be watching and playing with your dog. Focusing on that yummy cheeseburger instead of your dog can have unfortunate consequences.
Watch Your Dog
Sounds simple but it's the most over looked responsibility of dog handlers at the dog park. Keep a close eye on your dog to be sure you are picking up when they poop, distracting them when they dig, and relocating them when they run with the wrong crowd!
Dogs will be dogs and sometimes play becomes aggressive or downright dangerous. Be ready to intervene should play turn into something less fun!
Pick Up The Poop
Following up on the "watch your dog" tip, be ready to pickup after your dog and pickup any orphaned poop you notice. Keeping the dog park surface clean of feces is both a "quality of life" and health concern. If you see another handler ignore or fail to notice their dog's pile, politely let them know "..I don't think you noticed but Spot just pooped over there...".
Stop Rough Play - No Bullying!
If your dog is a bit too enthusiastic and causing other dogs discomfort, attempt to distract your dog by throwing a ball or frisbee, bringing them to another spot in the park, or if necessary leaving for the day. Look for signs that other dogs are not having fun - that's your cue to step in and do the right thing.

License Reminder!
Before you and your dog(s) visit the Baron Cameron OLDA, please be certain each dog has a current dog license attached to his or her collar. Licenses must be on the collar - you can not hold them or bring paperwork instead!
